Tough enough for the rigors of mountain biking and trekking, the attractive Classic XR wheels will beef up any rim brake-equipped bike. Built to last, these wheels require less maintenance down-time and expense than other wheel brands, keeping you pedaling down the road, or trail, for many thousands of miles.

Being Vagari’s lightest wheel in our XR series, and having hubs with cup-and-cone bearings set into ultra-polished races, the Classic XR accelerates more quickly than our other XR offerings. You will enjoy these supremely smooth and comfortably riding wheels.

Built to Vagari’s high standards for durability, the Classic XR wheels tie a Shimano Deore hub to a Sun Ringle’ Rhyno Lite eyeleted, triple-box construction rim using 36 Sapim Race spokes laced in our strongest pattern. This wheel design easily exceeds the demands of off-road use on mountain, gravel, trekking, and hybrid bikes alike.

Vagari Cycling Classic XR wheels:

…are perfect for your bike that’s equipped with linear pull, cantilever, side- or center-pull caliper, or U-brakes. This wheel is not compatible with disc brake systems.

…are designed for bikes with a fork end spread of 100mm and a dropout spread of 135 millimeters, and using quick release skewers.

…happily mount tires from 700x32mm (ERTRO size 32-622) to 700x56mm (56-622), or 29×1.4 to 29×2.2. (To determine compatibility with your bike, check your current tire sidewall for size markings.)

The rugged, low profile aesthetic of the Classic XR wheel looks fabulous on any rim brake-equipped bicycle—be it a hybrid, 29er mountain, or Dutch-style city bike, using quick release  skewers.

The black rims, hubs, and spokes—accentuated with a pop of silver at the nipples, rim eyelets, and rim brake tracks— make for extremely attractive wheels that remain looking stealthy long after the first few dozen rides….and no matter how dirty you get them.

At Vagari Cycling, we hand build every Classic XR wheel in our shop, right here in the U.S., using premium quality components that impress us.  By combining these parts with our decades of professional wheel building and bike repair experience, we create exceptional wheels that are more durable, longer lasting, and therefore more affordable than any other hand built or machine built wheels you can buy. 

During every Classic XR wheel build we:

  • carefully inspect every component, and ensure all hubs are optimally adjusted so you get the best roll right out of the box.
  • thoroughly clean all spokes and nipples, and treat the spoke threads with spoke prep to make sure the wheels are built to last. (Machine built wheels are not treated with spoke prep, and lose spoke tension more quickly.)
  • lace each wheel with 36 spokes in our strongest 3-cross lacing pattern. (This makes for a wheel that has increased comfort in the ride, high lateral rigidity for improved steering response, and a stellar level of durability for many thousands of miles of riding.)
  • tension each wheel slowly, by hand, to eliminate thread galling, spoke wind up, and damaged nipple fittings. (This is something machines can’t do, and often leaves you replacing components and/or wheels prematurely.)
  • check the spoke tension at least 3 times, to make sure it’s perfect. (Properly tensioned wheels are stronger and stay true longer.)

What’s in our Classic XR wheel:

Rim: Sun Ringle’ Rhyno Lite, 36 hole, aluminum alloy, black with machined brake tracks

  • These low profile rims are more forgiving than deeper rims when the wheel encounters any variation in the riding surface, lending to a more comfortable ride.
  • The machined brake tracks, a.k.a. sidewalls, on the rim provide optimal braking with all brake pads
  • Double walls with triple-box construction—long proven in BMX racing to withstand more stresses than other designs—uses geometric complexity for strength to create an incredibly durable rim.
  • Nickel-coated brass spoke hole eyelets in the rims protect against micro-cracks from forming in the rim and helps prevent corrosion from seizing the nipples to the rim—no “frozen” nipples mean no broken nipples when truing the wheel.

Hub: Shimano HB-T610 (front); Shimano FH-T610 (rear), both black

  • Rear hub is 8/9/10 and mountain 11 speed cassette compatible—also 7 speed compatible with a 4.5mm spacer.
  • Freehub rear—position of bearings better supports the axle, and protects against bending and breaking commonly found with freewheel systems.
  • Cup and cone design of these hubs allows for incredibly fast wheel rotation.
  • Super polished races prevent speed loss in corners, and allow for freakishly fast acceleration and rolling.
  • Double seals at each end to hold grease in, and to keep grime from entering and damaging the hub
  • Comes complete with quick release skewers

Spokes: Sapim Race, double-butted, stainless steel, J-bend, black

  • Stainless steel resists corrosion in all types of environments.
  • Sapim uses a stainless steel recipe and manufacturing processes that are superior to leading competitors—resulting in far fewer spoke failures.
  • Treated with black oxidation process that produces a sleek black finish that won’t chip
  • Double-butted Race spokes from Sapim have the right mix of elasticity for better shock absorption, and higher tensile strength to withstand greater shock forces—they hold up to road variations (rough roads, train tracks, etc.), and heavier load applications, better and longer than any other spoke we have used.

Nipples: Sapim Polyax, nickel-coated brass

  • Sapim Polyax brass nipples are many times stronger and more reliable than aluminum—they are much less likely to become brittle and crack from everyday riding stresses and environmental factors.
  • Polyax hemispherical head design more evenly distributes spoke tension pull, and helps prevent tearing through the rim.
  • Brass best holds up to maintenance—the “flats”, or spoke wrench fittings, are far less likely to round out during adjustments.
  • Brass is less likely to seize to the spoke or the rim due to galvanic corrosion—no “frozen” nipples mean no cracked or sheared nipples when truing the wheel.

This is the measurement between the outside faces of the locknuts on the front and rear hubs—and should match the spread between the fork ends and also the rear dropouts on your bike frame.

Shipping Policy

  • Vagari Cycling offers free shipping on all orders that include one or more wheels.
  • We also offer free car-side pickup, at our San Bruno location, on all orders.
  • For those who prefer to pick up using public transit, we offer:
    • Free BART-side pickup at the San Bruno BART Station on all orders.
    • Free Track-side pickup at the San Bruno Caltrain Station on all orders.
  • All of the wheels that we sell are built to order. Please allow 2 to 3 business days for all orders that include wheels to ship or to be ready for pickup.
  • Once we process your order, you will receive an email with a tracking number (for shipped orders). For pickup orders, you will receive an email with the location details for whichever pickup option you choose, and to schedule a pickup time.
  • All packages will ship via UPS Ground or, in some rare instances, USPS Ground to the contiguous 48 U.S. states. We are presently not offering shipment to AK, HI, or anywhere outside the United States.
  • We are unable to deliver to Post Office boxes.
  • We ship from the West Coast: so please allow 2 to 7 business days for your package to arrive once shipped; things like holidays and Mother Nature may add more days to this general estimate.
  • While we are not liable for packages that are lost, stolen, or delivered to an incorrect address, please contact us immediately if you need assistance with tracking your package.
  • Please notify Vagari Cycling within 48 hours from time of carrier delivery scan if your package has arrived damaged.

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

CANCELLATIONS
  • We offer a grace period of 24 hours, from time of your order placement, to cancel your purchase for a full refund, minus a 10% processing fee.
  • After 24 hours, you must wait to receive your order and initiate the return process outlined under our Return Policy.
RETURNS
  • At Vagari Cycling, a lot of thought and research goes into every product that we offer.  Because of this attention to detail and quality, we proudly stand behind all of our products.  We also put the same effort into every detail of our business structure, so that we may be responsible stewards of the environment, while still offering you the best and most affordable shopping experience.
  • We ask our customers to join us in making the shopping we all enjoy today into something that is affordable and sustainable for tomorrow.  Please keep returns (and thus resource consumption) to a minimum by ensuring you select the correct items for your purchase.  If you have any questions, please reach out to us via email or phone—we are happy to help.
  • Should you need to request a return for any reason, including warranty claims, please contact us at vagaricycling@gmail.com or 650.307.4298 to request a Return Authorization Number (RA#). Vagari will not accept any returns without a valid RA#.
    • Original proof of purchase is required for all returns.
    • Only items that are new, undamaged, never installed or used in any way, cosmetically unblemished, and otherwise resalable by Vagari Cycling as new, can be returned, and can qualify for a refund.
    • All returns must also be in the original, complete, and undamaged retail packaging.
    • Vagari Cycling reserves the right to refuse any returns at our sole discretion.
    • There is a 20% restocking fee for all returned items.
    • All requests for returns must be initiated within 14 days from package receipt by the customer.
    • Once an RA# is issued, it is good for 30 calendar days, after which no refund will be issued.
    • Customers are responsible for return shipment cost, and all damages that may occur when shipping product back to Vagari Cycling.  Customers are encouraged to insure the package to protect against possible mishaps in shipping.
    • All shipping costs are non-refundable.
    • Once the valid return is received and processed by Vagari Cycling, a refund will be issued to the original credit card used in the purchase within a reasonable time.  This timeframe may vary depending on the cardholder’s bank.
EXCHANGES
  • Unless we ship an item in error, all exchanges will be handled as returns and are subject to the policies outlined in the Return Policy.
  • If you receive an item in error, please contact us within 24 hours of receiving the package so we can make things right.
  • Once the product(s) for exchange have been returned, received and processed by Vagari Cycling, a new sale can be initiated.
CRASH REPLACEMENT POLICY
  • We know you will love your Vagari wheels, so if an “oh (bleep)” moment occurs, we’ve got you covered with a one-time, 25% discount off retail for your next purchase of wheels, good within the first 2 calendar years after your original wheel purchase.
  • This offer is only extended to the original purchaser of the wheels, and proof of that purchase is required.

WARRANTY CLAIMS
  • Vagari Cycling will honor manufacturers’ warranty against defects on merchandise we sell. We do not offer any warranty other than that of the manufacturer of the components, parts, and accessories we sell.
  • Warranties are extended solely to the original purchaser, and are not transferrable. Proof of purchase must accompany any warranty claims.
  • Please follow the procedures in the Return Policy to begin this process.
  • Customer is solely responsible for any shipping costs to Vagari Cycling associated with warranty claims.
